Barlett Attends Tax Conference

LEWISBURG, Pa.  – Rich Barlett, CPA and a shareholder with Lewis Barlett Klees, PC, recently attended a conference titled Top Tax Planning Strategies for Individuals and Small BusinessesAttendees learned strategies to offer their clients beyond conventional tax return preparation, allowing practitioners to bring real value added to the table when they advise their clients.

The topics covered were:

- Techniques for minimizing income tax by taking advantage of the 15% rate of tax on long-term capital gains and qualifying dividends,
- Getting the most out of the depreciation deduction for 2009,
- Dealing with debt cancellation and deferral of income tax on COD income,
- Minimizing self-employment tax on income from pass-through entities,    
- Maximizing the tax benefit of stock market investment losses,
- Taking advantage of new IRS rules allowing a theft loss deduction for Madoff-type Ponzi scheme losses,
- Qualifying for the first-time homebuyer credit and otherwise maximizing the tax benefit of home homeownership,
- Maximizing the tax benefit of NOLs by using a five-year carryback.
